Clune Wood

Nearest Town: Banchory, Aberdeenshire
OS Grid Reference: No 79 59 49
Directions: From Banchory, take the A93 towards Aberdeen, and then the right on the A957 to Stonehaven. Immediately after crossing the bridge, take the left turn on the B9077 towards Kirkton of Durris. At Durris, take the unclassified road on the right to the Woodlands of Durris. Continue uphill, past the school and bearing to the left. You will see Forestry Commission manged woodlands signposted on your right – park here. There are two tracks from the car park (they form a large circle), take the left hand one as you face uphill. Follow this uphill for about 10 mins, it will then curve to the right. After another five minutes of walking there will be a bench on the left of the trail. Just beyond is a path leading into the trees. Approx. 400 yards along this path is the circle.
Site Notes: Clune Wood (Also known as Clune Hill) is a hidden gem, off the beaten track. A true recumbent stone circle, with an adjoining burial cairn, the circle has been largely unspoiled over the millenia, and enjoys fairly open views as intended.
Well worth the walk, and another site to add to the list of essential Aberdeenshire circles.
