Glassel Dam Wood

glassel

Nearest Town: Banchory, Aberdeenshire

OS Grid Reference: NO 64 99 97

Directions: From Torphins, head south on the A980. Take the second right onto an unclassified road at Milton of Campfield, and proceed for about a mile. The very grand gates for Glassel House will appear on the left, and the forest track you need is directly opposite. Parking is difficult, do not park in front of the gates. I parked at the logging site 1/4 mile back up the road, but this is only advisable on Sundays. When you get to the track walk for approx. 100m until the track starts to dip. Turn left and proceed through the trees until you reach the circle. The site is at the top of a steep embankment. An OS map is strongly recommended.

Site Notes: Some effort is needed to reach this site, but it is well worth it. Very unusual in this part of Scotland, there are five standing stones, with at least two others fallen/never stood. Although the views were almost certainly open at the time of construction, I’ve found that the enclosing forestry can add an air of intimacy and peace to a circle. I liked this site a lot.

Please don’t add your own fire to those already burnt in the centre of the circle. Heat, followed by rapid cooling when the fire goes out can easily crack megaliths.
