Lanyon Quoit

Nearest Town: Penzance, Cornwall

OS Grid Reference: SW 430 337

Directions: On the unclassified road from Madron to Morvah NE of Penzance. In state care, signposted nearby, with small layby.

Site Notes: A quoit is the local term for a dolmen or remains of a burial chamber. The stones are the remains of what was once an earthen barrow, long since pulled and eroded away. The stones were never balanced precariously during construction, but were built into the earth, which does not detract from the skill of their construction, given their load-bearing capabilities thousands of years later.

Lanyon is something of a Victorian reconstruction, as it was once allegedly high enough to allow a horse and rider to pass underneath. That said, it remains an impressive & evocative site. As you can see from my photos, the August weather added some mystery to the site!
