The King Stone

Nearest Town: Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire

OS Grid Reference: SP 296 308

Directions: On unclassified road north of Chipping Norton between A44 & A3400. Follow signs for the village of Little Rollright. Site is occasionally signposted, large layby, beware of fast moving traffic! This is on the opposite side of the road from the layby.

Site Notes: An outlier to the Rollright Stones, the King Stone is an enigmatic standing stone of a very unusual shape, probably as a result of erosion similar to the main site. The railings were erected around 1883 by the Ministry of Works, to stop people stealing pieces of the stone. Although they definitely affect the feel of the site, you can’t help but feel they’re still needed. With your back to the road, walk past the stone to the edge of the ridge-you will be rewarded by a fantastic view across Oxfordshire. Once again, the builders chose their site well.
