Trevethy Quoit

Nearest Town: Liskeard, Cornwall

OS Grid Reference: SX 259 688

Directions: North of Liskeard, on the unclassified road between Tremar & Darite. Signposted if you’re observant, small parking on the green adjacent to the field the quoit is set in. Information board.

Site Notes: Another dolmen/cromlech/quoit, essentially the remains of an ancient tomb. Encased in earth at its construction, the stones would have been largely a hidden feature of the construction. Erosion, ploughing & robbing have taken their toll.

An impressive visit, I remain convinced that the capstone will slide down at any moment! One stone has fallen inwards (above, left) and some strange indentations have been revealed. No-one is sure whether they are prehistoric or more recent. A unique feature of this dolmen, is the hole clean through the capstone. Big enough to hold a flag pole it is rumored that is what it was for, and was a recent (last few hundred years) addition.
