Cnoc Fillibhear Bheag

Nearest Town: Stornoway, Isle of Lewis

OS Grid Reference: NB 22 53 27

Directions: On the left of the A858 from Stornoway, approximately a mile & a half before the main Callanish site. Small layby for parking, access across a short section of occasionally boggy path. Free.

Site Notes: This site is pronounced roughly as ‘Krok Filliver Veg’ and is also referenced as Callanish 3. Another absolutely amazing circle, and again there are hardly any visitors, as they all stream to the main site, visible on the horizon. Whilst in many ways a standard circle, the 4 stones in the middle make this something quite different. There are many theories that that the ancients worshipped a deity of the Mother Goddess, who had a triple aspect, that being the three main stages of a woman’s life: Maiden, Mother, Crone (Old/Wise Woman, Hag). This would appear to be supported here by a quite obviously phallic stone addressing/worshipping three quite different stones representing these three ages (below).

Obviously we can never know for sure, but it is intriguing and remains one of my favourite circles. A path leads downhill across occasionally boggy ground to Cnoc Ceann a’Gharraidh.

The one addressing the three?
