Standing Stones of Urquhart

Nearest Town: Elgin, Morayshire
OS Grid Reference: NJ 29 06 40
Directions: From the village of Lhanbryde, take the minor road towards Garmouth. Turn left for the village of Urquhart and drive straight through. At the next crossorads, park on verge and the stones are in the field to your left, across the junction. Easy access, free entry.
Site Notes: Not the most stunning of sites, but worth the detour if you’re driving through on the A96. The massive stones set over a wide arc give a tantalising glimpse of what once may have stood here. Rumoured to have been a recumbent stone circle, no evidence of that now remains. Many stones lay buried in the grass near the field edge, and while some are no doubt simply field clearance, others are shaped to suggest that they may once have formed part of the circle. Have a poke around and see what you think.

Very big stones, but what was the circle like?
