Tigh Na Ruaich

tigh-na-ruaich

Nearest Town: Pitlochry, Perthshire

OS Grid Reference: NN 97 85 34

Directions: Heading up the A9 for Perth, take the right turn for Ballinluig at the small section of dual carriageway. After making the turn, turn left at the filling station and onto the old single carriageway A9. Ignore the dead-end signs, and follow this road to the end. At the very end is Tynreich Nurseries, and the circle is in their grounds. It can be seen from the road, but the nursery owners are very friendly and readily give permission for access. There is no charge, but please visit only during opening hours.

Site Notes: An excellent little circle, very much of a similar design to Faskally and Clachan An Diridh, a few miles further up the valley. This circle was revealed around 1855 during clearance of scrub for what has become the gardens of Tynreich Nurseries. Six stones, the largest of which is approx. 7 feet wide form this circle, within which were found buried funerary urns and signs of cremation. The ground sounds very hollow when walking around the circle which could be due to the disturbance of the ground in 1855, but is also rumoured to be due to a watercourse beneath the site. The circle is a good visit, only a few minutes off the main road through the valley, and its well worth buying some plants while you’re here as well!
